1912

Sinking of Titanic

In April 1912, the "largest and most luxurious ship in the world" struck an iceberg and sank, with than 1,500 passengers. The next day, the English press announced that there had been no victims.

1962

Cuban Missile Crisis

October, 1962. This political-military episode made history as one of the most tense moments worldwide. It's the climax of the Cold War.

1963

Death of JFK

On 22 November 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and America was orphaned. The death of the media star who had become President gave rise to an uninterrupted television broadcast that lasted for 71 hours.

1968

Death of Martin Luther King

One of the greatest voices of Human Rights was silenced on 4 April 1968. Evangelical Pastor, social activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated before seeing his "dream" fulfilled.

1972

Munich Massacre

In 1972, the Olympics were interrupted by the first and only time. 11 Israeli athletes were taken hostage by a Palestinian group. "They're free!" announced the cover of The Sun on 6 September.

1980

Camarate

Twinjet Cessna C421 took off from Aeroporto Internacional de Lisboa headed to Oporto. Less than a minute after, it crashed in Bairro das Fontainhas, Camarate. Francisco Sá Carneiro was on board.
