Fátima was, for a few decades associated to the Salazar regime, mainly by sectors of the opposition to Estado Novo. However, António de Oliveira Salazar's only documented trip to Fátima took place on 13th May, 1967.
Fátima, a unique phenomenon of popular religiosity, imposed itself to the Church – and not the other way around. Contrary to popular belief, the hierarchy reacted with a lot of caution to the echoes of the first apparitions
